Do you know an unsung hero? Nominations are now open for the Thame Town Awards

Thame Town Awards are back and it’s time to celebrate our local unsung heroes who go out of their way for others to make our community a safer, more vibrant and happier place to live. Do you know someone who lives, works, studies, or contributes to life in Thame that deserves a Town Award? If so, nominate them! You can make your nomination online via the Town Council’s website, or collect a form from the Town Hall.

Company of the Year

A local company that has gone the extra mile for the wider community e.g., supporting community initiatives, offering opportunities, and practicing sustainability (companies can nominate themselves for this award).

Creative Arts Contribution

Someone of any age who excels in the Creative Arts and/or has contributed to the creativity of our town. This award covers a wide range of people – from the star of the show to the behind-the-scenes team and everyone in between. Nominations are welcome for any form of creativity.

Service with a Smile

There are so many individuals and businesses who consistently provide a friendly service in Thame, but who do you know that should be recognised for it this year? We’re not just looking for shop assistants – we also want to hear about opticians, carers, cleaners and doctors, to name but a few!

Sporting Contribution

This could be someone (or a team), of any age, who deserves a gold medal for their commitment to a sport or contribution to local sports. Perhaps a player who excels in their sport or someone who goes above and beyond to support their team from the side-lines. We are also looking for those who have made a notable contribution to sporting / fitness within the community.

Volunteer of the Year

Thame thrives on individuals who selflessly give their time to help others in our community. From fundraisers to friendly neighbours, there are plenty to choose from but who do you think deserves to be awarded Volunteer of the Year?

Volunteer Group of the Year

A volunteer group or organisation that has worked tirelessly for the good of our community. This could be a charity, but we also welcome nominations for less formal volunteer groups, who might have formed in response to the pandemic, or any volunteer group that makes a positive difference to their community.

To date, the Town Awards panel has awarded 73 Town Awards to local people and organisations.

Anyone can make a nomination. Visit https://www.thametowncouncil.gov.uk/community/town-awards/ and complete the online form, or pop into the Town Hall Information Centre to pick up a nomination form. Be sure to follow the Thame Town Awards Facebook page and on Twitter #ThameAwards to be one of the first to find out this year’s Town Award winners. Nominations are now open and close on Thursday 26 May.

Please visit https://www.thametowncouncil.gov.uk/community/town-awards/ for terms and conditions.

This year’s awards are generously sponsored by The HR Agency, Red Kite Radio, and Helpful Hirings.

“The HR Agency – People on purpose, is a Thame-based HR consultancy founded with a commitment to the environment and our local community.  Thame Town Awards provide our thriving community the opportunity to recognise and celebrate some of the brilliant people who make this such a great area to live and work! It’s a privilege for The HR Agency to be able to support this fabulous event.”

“Red Kite Radio, the Ofcom-licensed community radio service for Thame, Haddenham and the surrounding villages, has been on the air since June 2017. During that time, the station has worked closely with Thame Town Council to bring community information to the notice of all our listeners. As part of that process, Red Kite Radio is delighted to be one of the sponsors of this year’s Thame Town Awards, which recognise the incredible contributions of individual people in our town.”

“Helpful Hirings is so pleased to have the opportunity to support an event that praises local heroes. As a local business, it is amazing to see the amount of people who are being recognised for their hard work and dedication to the community. The Thame Town Awards is an event that highlights those who do that ‘little bit extra’ and it is a privilege to be sponsoring such an occasion.”

Hello Readers,Welcome to the September 2024 Issue of Look Local Magazine and our 12th Birthday Edition!Just like that, the summer holidays have come to an end, and it’s time for the kids to head back to school. I hope you all had a wonderful summer, filled with special moments with your children, friends, and family. There are plenty of exciting events happening at the Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway in the coming months, including “Kids Travel for a Quid,” the Steam Gala and Teddy Bear Day to name but a few. This month also marks the return of the ever-popular Thame Food Festival. Tickets are still available online through their website. For more details on these events, check out pages 14 - 17.I also want to mention two charity events that are coming up this month and early October. The 7th September sees the return of the Hearing Dogs for Deaf People free Plant, Cake & Dog Show. Dog agility and a fun dog show, not to mention delicious homemade cakes and plants, will be just some of the attractions taking place at the southern training centre in Saunderton (HP27 9NS). Visitors are welcome to bring their dogs along, provided they are kept on a lead and cleaned up after. Dogs can even be entered into the fun dog show, with prizes like “waggiest tail.” Attendees will also see the charity’s hearing dogs showcase their skills. The legendary sales, which are organised and run by long-standing Hearing Dogs volunteers, Fiona and Rob Daniels, have grown from very humble beginnings into one of the most popular fixtures in the Hearing Dogs calendar. In fact, since they began in 2020, the team has raised a staggering £80,000.And if you’re looking to challenge yourself then why not sign up for the Sue Ryder Starlight Hike Thames Valley which takes place on Saturday, 5th October. Walk 10k under the stars at Mapledurham Estate in memory of a loved one while raising funds to support those facing the end of life or grief. Supported by Azaego and Gravity Personnel, the event includes warm-up entertainment and live music. Finishers will receive a medal and the satisfaction of making a difference. The funds raised will help ensure no one faces death or grief alone.
