Look locally over The Garden Gate: January, the month of the ROSE…

Roses by Lucie Ponsford of Mimosa Garden Design

This year I want to take you through the calendar months with a plant in profile. But with a difference, we will be looking at the maintenance of some garden favourites. Thus January is the month of the Rose.

All roses benefit from an annual prune unless of course, you have a generous garden that can take the abundance of the rambling rose. Best when left to froth abundant over boundaries.

Hybrid, Floribunda, Shrub, English, Grandiflora, Climbers, and Ground Cover Roses are best pruned in winter when they are dormant. They are strong vigorous plants when they enjoy their conditions and they can take a good haircut to keep them in shape. This pruning process ensures the new current yearโ€™s growth is full of lots of blooms. The key here is a framework. They are tip bearing woody perennials and as such produce their flowers on the current yearโ€™s growth.

The blooms are big and heavy so roses do not really want to be pruned hard (eg. 2 inches above the ground). In fact, they all benefit from that aforementioned framework that thickens and holds shorter extension growth stable above the plant. This is in the main 4-6 inches above the ground unless a climber.

Prune to create a cushion-like shape, take out dead diseased and damaged wood, remove fallen leaves, and mulch with farmyard manure FYM for best results.

With love, Lucie xx

The long-established event, co-ordinated and run entirely by villagers, raises funds for local groups and causes, supporting schools, community organisations and facilities in the surrounding area. Last year it raised over ยฃ9,000 for local causes. The Fayre centres around the picturesque village green from 12:30pm - 4:00pm and this year visitors can enjoy live entertainment, childrenโ€™s games, a dog show, vintage cars, a BBQ, the tearoom and a huge variety of stalls selling quality gifts and goodies from local producers, plus thereโ€™ll be the ever-popular Bottle Tombola, Coconut Shy, Plate Smash, Plant Sale, Bric-A-Brac, Jewellery, Vintage Clothing and Tarot reader. Something else I wanted to draw attention to, after receiving a Press Release from Local home care company, Home Instead (Witney). They recently commissioned a survey of family carers and found 29% of them in Oxfordshire are at breaking point due to feeling highly stressed and isolated. It also concluded that a concerning 64% of them are neglecting their own health and well-being. As a company that supports older people in their own homes, Home Instead sees countless families in a desperate state as they seek to give their loved one the best life possible. If you are one of these people I urge you to reach out to them, or similar local organisations, to help you lighten the load. The full press release can be found on my website (here: https://shorturl.at/glvRX) along with contact information and tips that may help you and your loved ones. Hello, Lucie Ponsford here from Mimosa design,In this April edition of Look Locally Over the Garden Gate, I continue to tell the story of why plants perform in different places; with knowledge, there is power to grow in our gardens better. So far, we have discussed apex forest (temperate biome), desert plants (arid biome), and grassland biome.Read full article on Page 22 of the April Issue or click here: https://look-localmagazine.co.uk/look-locally-over-the-garden-gate-with-lucie-giselle-ponsford-9/ ... Hello Readers, Welcome to the April 2024 Issue of Look Local Magazine. Spring has officially sprung, the daffodils are blooming in abundance and lighter evenings are here once again. I am really looking forward to getting out and about around the local area with the kids this Easter holidays. First up we plan to take a trip to Oxford on the bus to explore the Natural History Museum which is FREE to enter. Throughout the Easter holidays you can take part in an eggciting family trail. Eggsplore the Eggstraordinary Easter Family Trail around the museum to find all the hidden eggswhilst discovering fun natural history facts and themed specimens! The museum also hosts Science Saturdays where you have the opportunity to dive into the ocean world with themed crafts and โ€˜meet the scientistsโ€™ sessions. Waddesdon Manorโ€™s annual Easter Adventure is on until 14th April and Waterperry Gardens are hosting a Hunt around the ornamental gardens. It costs ยฃ3.95 per child with a prize - check out their website for more info. There are lots of other cute little Easter trails taking place locally that I have seen pop up on Social Media - keep a eye out on our Facebook & Insta Pages as I will share any that I see. For any little train enthusiasts, Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railways, โ€˜Kids travel for a quidโ€™ initiative is back! See more information about this and their other upcoming events on page 15. And for those who have work commitments during the Easter Holidays and are looking to book your little people into some enjoyable clubs, I came across a brand new one thatโ€™s coming to Thame and Haddenham called The Outdoors Project (www.theoutdoorsproject.co.uk/aylesbury-thame/). They provide 100% outdoor adventures for years 1 to 6, which run throughout the Easter and Summer holidays. Thereโ€™s also two competitions to enjoy this month, our regular Thame Players Theatre competition is on page 19 and there also a chance to win tickets to this year Abingdon Air & Country Show on page 14.
