Travel Review: Thailand, the land of smiles…

boat on small island in Thailand

Having recently returned from the beautiful country of  Thailand, Traveltime Consultant Liz Hislop gives us an insight of what you can expect from this exotic destination.

The capital Bangkok is a vibrant city and a must see (if time permits) as a stopover before visiting the islands. The shopping and entertainment is hard to beat but there are also many beautiful sights to see such as the Grand Palace or a sunset cruise on the Chao Praya river.

Head from here to the islands, Koh Samui, Krabi and Phuket being amongst the popular ones for the first time visitor. One thing for sure is that the people of Thailand, wherever you visit, are warm and friendly and always seem to be smiling. Koh Samui has lovely beaches and plenty to see and do such as boat trips to the marine park and Jungle bungy jumping for the more adventurous.

Food is a delight and very varied all over Thailand, from traditional Thai to European and also extremely reasonably priced.

Krabi is a quieter island yet still has plenty to do for those who want it. Maybe take a longtail boat to visit other islands such as Phi Phi (avoiding the busy excursion trips) or maybe some horse riding along the beach or diving and snorkelling in the warm green sea.

Phuket is a busy island and the opposite time of the year for the monsoon season to the above, yet getting out and about and exploring will reward you with quiet local beaches and traditional beachside restaurants.

Getting around Thailand is easy, driving is on the left and car and scooter hire is well priced. For a night on the town Tuk Tuks are readily available. The vibrant town of Patong is a must for a night out, just like a mini Bangkok with its colourful nightlife with something for everyone with shopping in abundance. With a stay in Karon some 30 minutes away from Patong, you have everything from a great beach to low key restaurants and bars on your doorstep.

All in all, the islands of Thailand have something for everyone and choosing the right area means travel is possible any time of the year for good weather.
