If you’re one of the many people who stands in front of a mirror and pushes your skin upwards to reveal the taught jawline you used to have then High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) may be the answer you’ve been looking for!
Emma Rothery from ERA Skin & Laser Clinic in Thame explains more…
Along with lines and wrinkles, sagging skin is one of the most common age-related cosmetic concerns among both men and women. There are many reasons why skin starts to sag but the aging process and sun exposure contributes the most. Sagging skin can be particularly challenging to treat using topical and injectable products alone. Fortunately, advances in aesthetic procedures now mean there are professional skin-tightening treatment options that don’t require a surgical procedure to help you achieve a smoother, tighter and more youthful look.
HIFU stands for high intensity focused ultrasound and is an innovative, painless and non-surgical way to tighten skin, build collagen and smooth wrinkles. Highly concentrated ultrasound waves penetrate deep into the skin and stimulate collagen and elastin production. 20% of the result can be seen immediately after the treatment. With the final result visible 3-6 months later.
Sounds too good to be true… Is there any Science behind it?
Ultrasound has been used in the medical field since the 1950’s and was developed into an aesthetic treatment known as Ultherapy which was first used in 2008. Clinical study results are promising, a 2017 study involving 32 people showed that HIFU significantly improved skin elasticity. In a larger study of 93 people, over 66 percent of those treated perceived an improvement in the appearance of their face and neck after 90 days.
How does it work?
Highly focused ultrasound stimulates fibroblasts in the treated area which stimulates collagen production and tightens the structures thereby helping sagging skin to tighten itself and become firmer. This method requires no creams, no artificial filler products or toxins. It relies solely on the body’s natural regenerative process. The treatment targets deeper layers meaning that the surface of the skin is not affected. After the treatment, you can simply go about your usual activities.
What about side effects?
As with all aesthetic treatments you may experience side effects. These can include a heat rash or numbness in the treated area. Effects are temporary and if occur usually resolve within 24/48 hours.
Does HIFU just treat a sagging jawline?
No, HIFU can be used to tighten décolletage, lift the cheeks, eyebrows and eyelids as well as tighten skin on the neck (sometimes called “turkey neck”).
