If you’re looking for quality fine dining combined with a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere then look no further than Bluebella Roo’s at The Green Dragon in Haddenham.
This 18th Century, Grade II listed watering hole has recently been reopened under the new ownership of Kate Duffy and her partner Matt Wood (the venues very talented Head Chef) who along with their enthusiastic and passionate team look to provide a friendly, welcoming haven for locals and visitors alike.
Having previously owned Bluebella Roo’s, a fine dining restaurant in Berkhampstead, Matt, who was locally trained as a chef at Aylesbury College, was keen to bring his unique style and flair of preparing restaurant quality food to the Green Dragon whilst still retaining the muddy boots welcome, dogs allowed (in the bar area), family friendly, local village pub feel. This has been achieved by the warm reception you receive as soon as you walk through the door and reflected in the pub inspired menu which includes choices such as Pan Roasted Duck Breast, Best End of Lamb and proper pub classics like Dry Aged Ribeye Steak and Cornish Haddock Fish & Chips. It is however the accompaniments the dishes are served with and the way in which the food is presented that sets it apart from your average pub. The quality locally sourced produce is presented so elegantly it almost looks too beautiful to eat! I put the emphasis here on ‘almost too good to eat’ – because as soon as the fragrant aromas of the cuisine hit my nostrils all my senses were set alive and I couldn’t wait to tuck into the delicate feast which adorned our table.
To tease our palate whilst we awaited our three-course A La Carte experience we snacked on Smoked Salmon, Nori and Mouli Tacos. This was a combination of smoked salmon, seaweed and caviar wrapped in a Japanese radish, which was creamy yet crisp and light with a citrus kick – the perfect appetiser. We also decided to sample the breadbasket with balsamic oil, which included a selection of white and wholemeal choices, our favourite of them was the sultana & walnut bread. The sweetness of the fruit combined with the sharpness of the balsamic vinegar was a real treat on the tastebuds. What followed was our picture perfect starter of Blow-Torched Scallops, Fennel Puree, Orange, Black Sesame Seeds & Rock Samphire decorated with edible Borage and Wild Garlic Flowers. This dish really is a work of art from the beautiful presentation down to the explosion of flavours and textures bursting through every bite, and the scallop was so velvety, the knife slide through it like butter and then melted in the mouth! For our mains we opted for Best End of Lamb, Aubergine Caviar, Potato Fondant, Provencal Vegetables, Olives, Heritage Tomatoes and Dry Aged Ribeye Steak, Triple Cooked Chips, Watercress, Au Poivre Sauce both of which were cooked to perfection. My lamb in particular was succulent and the use of fresh Rosemary complemented the dish and balanced the flavours. The chefs have portion control down to a tee as both myself and my colleague (Hayley) had room for dessert and how could we not! Having just eaten one of the tastiest and artistic meals we have ever experienced we were excited about our sweet treat to complete the hat trick.
A Chocolate Delice with Salted Caramel, Crunchy Walnuts, & Raspberry Sorbet and a Pecan Tart with Granny Smith Ice Cream & Maple Syrup was the order of the day for us. The highlights of these dishes were the black plate, which framed the heavenly Delice making it look like a painting, and the taste was similar to a selection of indulgent, luxurious chocolates as all the different flavours came through. The Pecan Pie was sublimely balanced with nuts vs. treacle harmoniously encased in its delicate flaky pastry base with the pierre de resistance being the cider apple ice cream. This gave the dessert a whole new dimension turning it from what would usually be a warming winter comforter to the ideal summer pud! This is a dessert that Mary Berry would be proud of – no soggy bottoms here – and if table manners didn’t apply we would have licked our plates clean.
As well as the A La Carte menu, The Green Dragon offers a Set Lunch Menu for the very reasonable price of £14.95, Bar Snacks, Sandwiches, a Sunday Roast and a Coffee Morning every weekday from 9am – Noon. There is also a great selection of real ales, specialist spirits and award winning wines to choose from and they can cater for private functions and exclusive venue hire if required.
