Editorial Feature: North Mill Stoves, warm the heart…

Charnwood cove-1 to bathroom

Versatility is at the heart of Bledlow based business North Mill Stoves. A respected local family business managed by Ian Pearce and his daughter Laura Morgan, the company have helped to bring warmth and style to over 30,000 homes in their 25 years of business. Laura talks to us about some of the more unusual and creative places in which they have installed their stunning stoves and fireplaces.

It’s not as uncommon as you might think for us to install a stove in other rooms of the house such as the kitchen, study or bedroom. How about considering the bathroom as a wonderfully indulgent solution perhaps in a weekend retreat or holiday cottage? Particularly with the cooler Spring and Autumn months, we can help to make those chillier corners of the home more usable.

One of the areas that we have seen steady growth is in rooms where a stove is the least fuss heating option. This includes conservatories and garden rooms but also small independent buildings with more unusual uses such as information kiosks for the National Trust to keep volunteers warm and garden rooms and lodge offices where electricity can, longer term, be a more expensive heat source than a wood burner. One of our stoves keeps the office at Natural England Aston Rowant warm all year round.

We have seen an increase in the renovation of older properties and the repurposing of existing building such as barn conversions. Even with excellent insulation and stunning original features, the taller ceilings can leave the space feeling a little cold. A free standing stove and a simple flue system immediately creates a focal point and a desire to pause and relax.

The lovely feature with these types of rooms is people are often more relaxed and open to stoves that they wouldn’t consider in a more formal or traditional setting such as a lounge fireplace. It’s a great opportunity for us to showcase some of our more adventurous offerings such as multi- sided or revolving stoves or space saving styles that work well in open plan areas.

We thrive on being asked to install a stove in a location which requires some careful thought and planning in order to achieve a system which meets Building Regulations. With Ian’s engineering background, he thrives on finding a solution where others might fail or fear to attempt.

Bringing the outside in…
In the last couple of years homeowners have constructed conservatories and orangeries instead of more mainstream extension. These rooms are beautifully light and airy but can be challenging to heat – a stove makes a perfect independent solution.

One customer decided to put a small stove in a lovely turreted garden room which was often a little chilly but with beautiful views of the Chilterns. Since our installation, they have now moved into the room instead of the lounge. “We find it so convenient to heat and just so cosy on a chilly evening. It’s given us our own little hideaway when our teenage kids are home!”

Even chillier spaces can be transformed with the installation of a stove. With camping and outdoor living becoming evermore popular, stoves have become a no-brainer for yurts and tents, patios and garden spaces. A number of our stove manufacturers offer solutions for outdoor living including free standing stoves, fire pits and barbecues. Why not talk to us about any number of chilly locations in your home?
