Celebrating Great British Produce with a Great British Lifestyle in deli-cious fashion…

Whilst out doing some Christmas shopping back in December I found myself perusing the abundant selection of quality British produce adorning the shelves of one of Thame’s newest establishments, The Deli at No.5.

This quaint independent delicatessen, opened by the Lady Mayor of Thame, back in October can be found at 5a Buttermarket on the cobbled street that leads to the Town Hall and it really is an artisan food and drink lovers’ paradise.

Owned by food enthusiasts, Joe Bastin and Hannah Leah Jones, the Deli is a creation of a vision the young couple had after visiting a quirky little shop selling food, clothes and home ware, when holidaying in Ibiza. Upon returning, the self confessed food lovers, whose previous professional backgrounds are a far cry from what they are doing now with Hannah once working in the film industry and Joe a former occupational therapist for people suffering brain injuries, set about turning their dream into a reality. To ensure they could bring customers the ultimate in quality food produce and home ware, Joe and Hannah frequented a number of local farmers markets and food shows across the country resulting in them forming fantastic business relationships with small, local producers which is an ethos they are passionate about continuing well in to the future.

And from this, a homely and quintessentially British Delicatessen has been born bringing together carefully selected chutneys, cured meats and fine cheese as well as handmade wooden, textile and pottery home ware made by British artists. The couple also pride themselves on their well-stocked specialist alcohol selection (most of which won’t be found in the supermarket or off-license) including beer from the local brewery in Thame, which they are more than confident in recommending how best to serve and with what meal accompaniment.

Having now been in business for 3 months, and recently winning the prestigious accolade of ‘Best Christmas Window Display’ at Small Business Saturday on 3rd December, an event which looks to highlight small business success and encourage consumers to ‘shop local’, Hannah and Joe have big plans for 2017 with a number of special events coming up – watch this space – that can only further enhance the buzzing foodie hub that Thame is fast becoming renowned for.
